14 Ways to Get Spiritually Fit

A journal entry turned accountability guide for your walk with God.

This is Part 2 of the Spiritually Fit Blog Series.
If you haven’t already, start here with the opening prayer to become Spiritually Fit.

You know what’s better than finding money in an old pocketbook?

Rediscovering a forgotten word from God buried in your old journal—just when you need it most.

It’s the best feeling—present me stumbling across old prayers, ideas, and godly insights I didn’t even realize I needed.

Just between me and you I’ve been slacking a little. Okay, a lot. Honestly, I’ve found myself in one of those dry places where I know what I need to do, but my appetite—both physically and spiritually—just hasn’t lined up.

And it’s shown up in my prayer time, my Bible study, and how I steward what God has entrusted to me.

Quick side note: This past Wednesday, I stumbled upon a teaching I recorded three years ago—something God gave me in a dream for wives. I didn’t pass the test that day, but I passed it this week. The message hit different.

Hand written journal entry with words 14m Ways to get spiritually fit.

“Past Erica” was on point—and she came through for me again. Except this time, her time capsule of godly advice was dated sometime before March 10, 2021. I had been rereading a book I’ve had for at least 18 years.

Under Chapter 2, I wrote this question to myself:
“Are you compromising spiritually to accomplish your goals?”

And then this prayer:
“God, please make me at rest inside as You are changing my outside.”

Whew. Past Erica, why are you all up in our future business like that?

If I had to answer now… maybe I am. And maybe that explains why I feel so “at rest”—or dare I say, stalled.

Okay, let me get back on track. I’ll unpack the rest of that later.

Spiritual Fitness

That was the header I found.

Then I saw 14 bullet points underneath—practical steps I had written down to help me stay spiritually fit. And once I reread them, I immediately knew… I had to share them with you.

Let’s Pray Before We Begin

Yahweh, as we review this list, my prayer is that You make these habits a reality and a tangible part of our lives.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Now that you’ve prayed and surrendered your heart, here are 14 practical ways to walk out your commitment and stay spiritually strong—day by day.

1. Read the Bible every day.

2. Pray every day.

3. Share the Gospel Weekly.

Talk to someone about God’s Good News or the Gospel at least once a week.

4. Pray for others or with someone else at least once a week.

5. Listen to Sound Doctrine Weekly.

Listen to sound doctrine that challenges you spiritually and provokes you to grow in Christ once a week.

6. Join a Christian group

  • Share struggles, trials, offer encouragement, or be encouraged.
  • Meet at least once a month. (If this doesn’t exist, create it.)
  • This would probably be more beneficial if done weekly or bi-weekly.

7. Keep a Prayer Journal.

Keep a prayer journal to record praise reports, prayer requests, and track personal character and spiritual growth. (Like the one I just found.)

8. Memorize Scripture.

One verse or a few verses weekly.

9. Pay attention to pitfalls

Spend time actively asking the Holy Spirit to expose, strengthen, and deliver you in these areas.

10. Line your life up.

Line your life up with the Bible and biblical principles and see where you fall short. Here are a few things to get you started:

11. Use your hands properly.

  • Build your house (Proverbs 14:1)
  • Whatever they find to do (Ecclesiastes 9:10)
  • Be of service to others.
  • Volunteer with a non-profit, church, or in the community (e.g., cleaning up the neighborhood)

12. Be Neighborly.

Do you know those who live around you?

13. Support the Gospel through tithes and giving. (Luke 8:1–14)

14. Get rid of excuses and the lies of the enemy.

  • I’m not called to…
  • That’s not my ministry.
  • That’s not my responsibility.
  • I have nothing to offer.
  • I’m too busy.
  • God can’t use me.
  • I’m not qualified.
  • I don’t know where to start.
  • My life is over—that’s for young people.
  • I’m too young—I don’t have enough experience.
  • I can’t talk (Moses)
  • I’m too shy (Paul)
  • I’m not a people person.
